Remembering Western Sahara President Mohamed Abdelaziz

Posted by Holly Jerrett on June 02, 2016 @ 12:38 PM

It is with great sadness that we must inform you of the death of the Saharawi's leader for the past 40 years, President Mohamed Abdelaziz.  He died on May 31, 2016, following an extended illness.

President Abdelaziz was a great friend and advocate of our work in the refugee camps.  We have many wonderful memories of him and his kindness, generosity, wisdom, and the heartfelt care he took of his people....like the heart of a good shepherd for his flocks.

The Saharawi people will be in a time of mourning for the next 40 days.  Many of you who have visited the camps, met Saharawi people, or learned of them through the work of Not Forgotten will understand the great loss they are now experiencing, as well as the grief in our own hearts.  He leaves behind his wife and children, and the people of Western Sahara.
